I’ve wanted to learn piano for a very long time. I can remember as far as when I was a very young child, perhaps 2 years old. I was sitting on the floor in front of my toy baby grand. My mom was hitting some keys and I learned to play just the way she hit them. I fell in love with piano ever since. As a baby, I used to practice every day. Namely played my toy baby grand every day.
That memory of me sitting on the floor playing my baby grand piano was vividly in my mind every time I saw a piano.
back in 1996, when I was back to singing in a choir at a local church, I found hitting the notes on a piano and knowing the exact tone of what I was supposed to sing was crucial to my singing correctly.
So, we bought a Yamaha keyboard. I Fell in love with it right away. My confidence in singing soared.
2004, I took a deep breath and walked up to the pianist at the church and asked her if she could teach me. She said yes. So, my piano journey began. I met with her weekly at her home and played for an hour each lesson for two years.
But then I lost my father and everything stopped. My heart was broken, so broken. I stopped my singing lessons as well as my piano lessons. I was going to learn to play a song for my father and sing it to him while I play the piano.
Rolling forward in time, 2018, I was playing Pokemon and was stuck trying to beat the legendary Pokemon by myself in the virtual gym on the street. I need help. I looked around and saw a couple of cars nearby looking like they were trying to do the same. So, I walked up and asked, “Are you playing Pokemon?” Strange as it is, Pokemon makes you do silly things like that
Luckily, the person rolled down the window and said yes. So, that is how it all started all over again (not knowing it).
We beat the gym and began running to other gyms when I got a message that a big group was teaming up. So, I invited the first that I just met to come with us to the big gym. We shared our Pokemon Friend’s codes and kept sending gifts so we could level up.
One day, my new friend contacted me to meet up with him to trade so we can level up bigger and more points. We met at a restaurant. Ate and traded Pokemons. Somehow, somewhere around space and time, I talked about music and wished I could play piano. That was when my ears heard, “I can teach you.”
My piano passion rises back up again!
“That’s great. What do you do?”
He replied, “I’m a composer.”
“Aw! I can pay you.” I said.
He replied, “If you practice, I wont charge you. But if you don’t practice, I will charge you then.”
“Wow!” My mind said, that is great. All I got to do is practice and I get free lessons on piano! What a great idea!
So, my journey in piano began once again.
My husband cooked dinner and we brought it with us at each lesson as a way to say thank you to my new teacher. My husband is a musician too. So they were talking about music every time.
After dinner, I will sit at the piano and learn.
He started with ‘inversion” with me. My husband was so pleased that someone didn’t start with playing songs, or playing from baby levels.
